International Men’s Health Week: Know The Facts

In an effort to raise awareness about both the physical and mental health of men, Men’s Health Week has been celebrated worldwide since 2002.

What is a men’s health issue?

According to the Men’s Health Forum in Ireland, a men’s health issue can be defined as a disease or condition unique to men, more prevalent in men, more serious among men, for which risk factors are different for men, or for which different interventions are required for men. Facts about Men’s Health in Ireland

On average men die 5 years younger than women in Ireland. Cardiovascular disease, triggered by an unhealthy lifestyle, is the number one cause of male death worldwide. Coronary heart disease accounts for 40% of all deaths in Ireland. Obesity and other unhealthy lifestyle practices including smoking and the excessive intake of alcohol have been linked to cardiovascular disease. In a recent study it has been found that only 18% of men in Ireland exercise at least 5 times a week. Thankfully, the risk of many of these conditions can be reduced with some small lifestyle changes.

What should I do about my men’s health issue?

The first step is to talk about health worries or concerns. By encouraging men to talk about their health issues, be it mental or physical, with their GP or local Allcare Pharmacist, an effective method of treatment can be developed.

Advice for Men

Exercise: It is important that men stay healthy and active, by taking part in least 30 minutes of physical activity, 5 times per week. Being active is beneficial for noth mental and physical well-being.
Diet: Men should limit the intake of foods that are high in salts and fat, in an effort to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Reducing the intake of high fat dairy products and increasing the intake of green vegetables can limit the risk of prostate cancer.

Talk: It is time to break down the barriers associated with men’s health. Do not be afraid to speak with your GP or pharmacist regarding healthcare issues. Discussing and identifying a men’s health problem could save your life.

Regular Check-Ups: Prevention is better than a cure, so take time to have your health checked regularly.
